Merge Tag

A merge tag is a coded placeholder, such as *|FNAME|* or {{first_name}}, that an email platform replaces with a subscriber's specific data when the email is sent.

In depth

Merge tags map to columns or fields in your subscriber list, and at send time the email service provider substitutes each tag with that contact's value, so one campaign reaches thousands of people while greeting each by name. Syntax varies by platform, for example Mailchimp uses *|MERGETAG|* while many tools use {{double_braces}}, and nearly all support a default value so an empty field does not break the copy.

The classic mistake is shipping a campaign without sending a seed test, leaving a raw, unresolved tag visible in subscribers' inboxes, an instantly recognizable amateur error. In a quiz-funnel and lead-qualification workflow, merge tags pair naturally with captured scorecard data: once a Pivix quiz records a lead's name, company, and score tier, your email platform can merge those values into automated nurture emails so each one reads as if written for that single prospect.

Example in practice

A lifecycle marketer at a SaaS startup imported 5,000 leads from a Pivix quiz, mapping name, company, and score tier into list fields. The welcome email used merge tags: "Hi *|FNAME|*, here's what your *|TIER|* score means for *|COMPANY|*." A seed test caught one unmapped field before launch; the corrected send achieved a 41% open rate, up from 27% on the prior untagged version.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a raw merge tag showing in my email?

It usually means the tag's name does not match a field in your list, or the field was empty with no default set. Always send a seed test and configure fallback values before launching a campaign.

Do merge tag formats differ between platforms?

Yes. Mailchimp uses *|TAG|*, while many other tools use {{double_braces}} or %tag% syntax. Always check your specific platform's documentation so the tags resolve correctly.

How do I get reliable data for merge tags?

Capture fields through structured forms or quizzes and keep your list clean so values are consistent. A quiz funnel records names, company, and score tiers as tidy fields you can merge into nurture emails.
